SCMAP mourns the passing of Meneleo Carlos Jr., an industrialist, business leader and staunch supporter of logistics in the Philippines. He was 95.
Carlos most recently led the chemical conglomerate Resins Inc., which he took over after the retirement of his father. He was also chairman emeritus of the Federation of Philippine Industries and held key roles in other business organizations such as the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Export Development Council.
Carlos’ support for the Philippine logistics sector, and advocacy for lowering costs and improving services, was unmatched. He was a key supporter of the roll-on/roll-off initiative that evolved into the current Philippine Nautical Highway System, which further encouraged the seamless movement of goods in the country.
He was also a key figure in opposing Executive Order 59, which would have led to the establishment of a cargo handling monopoly in Manila’s ports. SCMAP’s predecessor organization, DMAP, convened multiple groups in opposing the order, and Carlos’ participation as part of FPI and EDC led to the establishment of the Coalition for Shipping and Ports Modernization, which actively advocated against the EO.
Despite his advanced age, Carlos continued to actively provide inputs to SCMAP as it endeavored to further move the global competitiveness of Philippine supply chain.
SCMAP expresses its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Ito Carlos.
