In 2014, he was the only Filipino to have been shortlisted for the biennial World Mayor award, organized by the World Mayors Foundation. A graduate of West Visayas State University, he later took further studies at the Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Visayas. Prior to his political career he worked for supply chain firms Delbros and K-Line, before establishing his own business in Manila.
