The first Sharpening the Supply Chain Practitioners – a seminar organized by SCMAP Visayas – saw 70 delegates from 35 companies take part, listening to talks from esteemed supply chain executives and managers on topics such as S&OP, ISO certification and leadership.

Held last 21 April at the Golden Prince Hotel in Cebu City, the day-long event also served as the induction of the new board of directors of the SCMAP Visayas chapter, which was elected during the chapter’s last event held on 20 January.

Transfluent Management’s Ninoy Rollan kicked off the event with a look at what he described as “D.I.G.O.N.G.” leadership, and dove into how managers can encourage their employees to grow and develop as they go on in their careers.

Supply chain consultant (and former SCMAP president) Enrique Castillo followed with a look at sales and operation planning, a concern usually connected to manufacturing, but also can apply to supply chain and logistics – an effort he led while he was president of Fast Logistics.

Jong Fernandez, head of AGF Consulting Group, discussed the new ISO 9001:2015 standard, particularly its new focus on performance rather than mere compliance, and how it affects those in the supply chain industry, as well as other sectors seeking the certification.

LF Logistics country head Santi Gutierrez followed with a light-hearted look at what he calls the “eight deadly sins” one in the supply chain industry should not commit, peppered with many anecdotes from his decades working in multinational supply chain operations.

Finally, Mondelēz Philippines’ Cris John Garcia returned to Cebu – he previously spoke at SCMAP Visayas’ Vismin Supply Chain Management Congress in July last year – to look at developments in customs modernization and ocean freight, particularly new customs regulations, as well as the impact of consolidation in the shipping industry on world supply chains.

SCMAP national president Nestor Felicio also flew in from Manila to induct the newly elected SCMAP Visayas board, led by president Gilbert Cabataña. He also framed upcoming SCMAP events and activities in light of recent moves in the supply chain industry. Cabataña, for his part, extolled the growth of the Visayas chapter and reiterated its commitment to furthering the supply chain industry not just in the region, but in the country.

Cabataña envisions Sharpening the Supply Chain Practitioners to be a regular event for the Visayas chapter, after the warm reception the first event received, not just from the delegates, but from the speakers, who relished the chance to give back to the industry.
